Concrete Blocks Make the Grade

The use of concrete blocks dates back to the 1830s, when they were first formed much as bricks are today.

The first house constructed solely of pre-fabricated pieces was built in 1937 on Staten Island, New York. Since that time, they have taken on different designs and shapes, but they all have the same basic criteria.
Concrete masonry blocks fit in five main categories: hollow load-bearing; solid load bearing; hollow non-load bearing; building tile; and brick. Among the load bearing ones there are two grades, N and S. Grade N designates general use, meaning they could be used for either outside or inside construction. Grade S indicates higher grade pieces that would be appropriate inside a structure. They also have a weather-protection coating that can do well as part of high-quality exterior walls.

Those two grades are divided a second time into type I and II. The first category includes those treated for moisture control, so they can stand up to arid climates. The second signifies non moisture-controlled pieces. Protective coatings are often applied to protect the blocks from water damage and subsequent erosion. Those coverings could include latex or Portland cement paints, epoxy coatings, urethanes or silicones.
The terms concrete and cinder blocks are often used interchangeably, although there is a difference.

Originally, the former was made only of concrete, sand and crushed stone. Today it may include aggregates such as slag, pumice, coal cinders, shale and clay. Cinder units are similarly made from concrete, but instead of rocks the additive is either coal cinders or ash. This makes them lighter and cheaper than the cement-made ones.

A concrete block can contain either single or multiple hollows where mortar and rebar can be placed for added stability. The open space can help with insulation, and it also reduces the weight of the units for easier transporting and stacking. Pieces vary in size, with the most common being about 8 by 8 by 16 inches. They come in either a flanged or straight edge.

To be considered concrete bricks, they must meet certain specifications such as weight, moisture content and compressive strength. When properly installed, walls made with them can be both durable and attractive while also offering fire resistance. They are relatively easy to install as well.

Since the manufacture of concrete blocks gained popularity in the early 1900s, they have been used to build walls, foundations, houses and commercial buildings. They are just a valuable for projects today. When you are ready to start construction, consider your location and purpose.
